Thailand Time
Isaan is a region in the northeast region of Thailand and starts about 350Km North East from Bangkok. The natural beauty of Isaan stuns all who visit as you drive through dramatic mountains, along the meandering Mekong River and past countless brilliant green rice patties.
Isaan is the least developed part of Thailand. Only 2% of Thailand's tourists visit Isaan and a limited number of farang (foreigners) live here. This is the real Thailand where you will mix with locals who will show real delight whilst you practice the Thai Language that you have learnt.
You will get to see how the farming communities live and you will very soon become part of the community, schools will welcome you as a foreigner who can talk to students, you will be invited to family weddings and birthday parties and buddhist ceremonies. You simply have to make an effort and within a very short time you will see smiling faces welcoming you at every corner.
Yet at the same time you are less than 30 minutes from the largest city in the
region with world class shopping malls, high quality supermarkets and movie
theatres where you can watch all the latest Hollywood Blockbusters.
Even nearer and you find yourself in the bustling market town of Ban Phai - here
you have banking facilities, quality hotels, a bus and train terminus with direct links
to Bangkok and Chang Mai and all towns in between and a huge market that
opens at 3am every morning with every foodstuff you wil ever need.
If you like fishing you will access to a myriad of rivers and streams and access
to a huge reservior only 10 minutes from Ban Phai. If you like golf Isaan has a
number of quality golf courses where you can indulge your passion until your
heart is content, but with green fees a fraction of what you would pay at home.
If you want to learn to fly then simply speak to the flying school at Khon Kaen
and learn to fly, again at a fraction of the price you would pay at home.
Whatever you wish to do in your spare time - you can do in Isaan.
If you want to see the real Thailand you can visit religious Wats and seeThailand at
work weaving silk and baskets or relax and watch farmers tending Pigs and Cattle and
harvesting their rice. If you want a whole pig in your freezer for barbeques then ask any
farmer and you will have a freshly killed and prepared carcass delivered to your home within a few hours.
Rural life will unfold all around you as you drive. Herdsman lead huge white cattle along the sides of the road; farmers chug along in homemade tractors smoking cheroots; pickup trucks loaded with garlic, stacked 15 feet high, defy the laws of physics as they speed around curves; women on the roadside sell live eels in clear plastic bags, which you can buy and release to make merit or fry up for a tasty snack.
Yet at the same time you will have a home with Western Fittings and quality
Air Conditioning which will allow you to dip into the real Thailand when you
wish but retreat to your Western Comforts when you relax.
If you wish to holiday in Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya or Chang Mai then
within 2 hours you can be there travelling by Thai Airlines from Khon Kaen
Airport, with daily flights to Bangkok from as little as 1500 Thb and taking only 40 minutes.
If you want a more sedate travelling experience then travel by Bus or Train from Ban Phai for as little as 200 Thb to
Bangkok and spend those 6 hours simply watching the magic of Thailand unfold through the window.
So many people are realising that the beach and nightlife home either for holiday or for retirement is not such an attractive offer when you look at the inflated prices, crowded beaches and holiday makers out for the party of a lifetime. In these "Tourist Hotspots" you are paying at least 40% more for everything than you will do in Isaan and you have a pace of life that in Bangkok that is on a par with living in New York. The peace and tranquilty on offer in Isaan is something that millions of people dream of everyday.
So whether it is Golf Fees, a Thai Beer, a Haircut, a Meal, A Taxi, a Thai Massage, your Cable TV fees, buying a Car or a Motorbike or getting workmen to do those tasks you cannot do yourself, you will see just how much cheaper things are in Isaan compared to Bangkok, Phuket, Ko Samui or Pattaya.
